As always, when I find a tool that saves my butt, I like to share it with the rest of the world.
This weekend I rebuilt our company's remote access Terminal Server. There was one particular application that I could not get to work. When you try to execute it, nothing happened. No events logged in the application log, no hour-glass, no hard drive activity - nothing.
After hours of troubleshooting, I found that if I set the app's compatibility mode to 'Windows XP', it ran just fine. Only problem is, this setting only applies to the current user. I needed a utility that would run this app in XP Compatibility Mode for everyone.

If you haven't already addressed the changes to DST in your environment, TIME IS RUNNING OUT! We just took care of our servers and clients - here's what you need to know.
Get all of your servers patched ASAP! Keep in mind that Windows 2000 Server does not have a patch. You need to use tzedit.exe, or import the proper registry keys. I chose to go with the latter, as importing a registry key is way easier! Check out How to configure daylight saving time for the United States in 2007 for either option. Additionally, you can import the same registry keys to your workstations if you are not sure everyone received the KB931836 patch.
Patch your Windows 2003 servers! Grab the KB131836 patch, and patch 'em NOW!
If you haven't updated your XP clients to SP2, the time has come. You can not apply the DST update without it. SO, make sure all of your systems are updated, and install the XP version of KB931836
Running Exchange Server 2003? You will need to install the Exchange DST update to ALL exchange servers! Once again, SP2 - you must be running SP2 on your Exchange Servers. Stop thinking about it, and just do it!
By the way, you should be following these steps in order!
Run the Exchange Calendar Update tool! This utility will allow you to update all appointments for all mailboxes in your organization. HOWEVER, in order to use this utility, make sure you run this on a client (not an exchange server) with Outlook 2003 OR Outlook 2007! Additionally, you will need to create a MAPI profile that has Send-As rights for all mailboxes!! |

OK, first of all I lied about my New Years resolution. I have still neglected this website like a red-headed step child. My apologies...
I was planning on writing my "Force Group Policy Updates Part 2", but I realized that if you wait long enough, someone will have written a free app that will do everything for you!
Specops GPUpdate is another freebie you need to snatch up now! This GUI will not only allow you to force Group Policy updates, but gives you the ability to remotely restart, shutdown, or start computers with Wake On Lan! The easy to use interface also gives you a real-time status on the commands you have sent to the selected machines...
