M$ & Yahoo

So, as you have all probably heard by now, Microsoft is feeling the heat, and in desperation tried to gobble up Yahoo for something like $43 billion! What the hell is happening to Microsoft?

In the past 5 years or so, they have come out with a gaming system, an MP3 player, and now they want to go toe-to-toe with Google in the Search Engine arena. What happened to the big software company? I think they are loosing focus of what they are supposed to be doing. If they would stop getting distracted, and focus on their software, perhaps Vista would have actually been ready when it shipped.

My fear is this:

Software giants can fall. It wasn't but 10 years ago when Novell was the Server of choice. They lost their market virtually over-night! With more and more open-source applications, and free-ware alternatives, many companies - AND home users are looking at alternatives.

You may remember that Apple was about to fall of the face of the earth, and then came the iPod. Now every PC owner has an Apple device plugged into their USB port. Now the PC people are staring down the pretty new Mac Air's  when they see one at Starbucks. The web browser of choice is Mozilla Firefox. Nobody likes Vista...

I'm not saying this is a bad thing in general, but it could be potentially bad for me, and many other Windows System Engineers. This is what we know, and this is what we are comfortable with. So what's going to happen when Server 2008 ships? God, I hope these guys did their homework, and build a solid OS, or I may have to go pick up one of those Star Office / Red Hat pick at Borders.

Check your AV Settings!

Being an IT Consultant, I can’t tell you how many times I go to a client’s site, and their biggest complaint is the performance of some proprietary network application.

A large portion of my clients are lawyers, and every law firm nowadays has some sort of document management system in place. Before hiring me as a consultant, they have worked with their account reps for hours trying to find a resolution to the terrible performance of these applications.

Before you exhaust these resources, check your AV settings!! I have found that 8 out of 10 times, these problems are a result of a mis-configured antivirus solution!

If your AV solution has an option to scan network files, and you are pretty certain that every machine in you environment is protected, TURN OFF NETWORK SCANS! This will increase overall performance when working with files on a network share.

If you are working with a program similar to a Document Management System (DMS), contact the vendor, and ask them what files should be excluded from AV Scans. This will typically be the program directory, and share on the server. Additionally, you may want to exclude the program directory on the client side as well.

Bottom line, don’t over-look the obvious. It’s easy to do… but sometimes there is a very easy solution to a big problem!
